White vinyl privacy fence with matching posts behind a row of shrubs

Look. Vinyl gives a crisp, uniform finish that stays the same color year after year. White is the classic choice, but tan, gray, and wood-grain textures are available too. It comes in solid privacy panels, semi-private styles with lattice tops, and traditional pickets, so it works for a backyard enclosure or a front-yard accent.

Upkeep. This is where vinyl shines. It won't rot, it doesn't need stain or paint, and insects ignore it. A rinse with the hose or a gentle wash once or twice a year handles mildew that can build up in shady, humid spots. The trade-off is that vinyl panels are less forgiving of a hard impact than wood, and a damaged section is usually replaced rather than patched.

Cost. Vinyl costs more than wood to install, landing in the upper-middle of the range. Many homeowners make that back over time by skipping the staining and board replacements a wood fence needs. If your HOA allows it, vinyl is one of the easiest fences to live with long term.
