Privacy Fences

Solid, full-height fencing for backyards, patios, and property lines.

What it looks like

A privacy fence is a solid fence with little or no gap between boards, so you can't see through it from the street or the yard next door. Most residential privacy fences are six feet tall; eight feet is common where it's allowed, especially along busy roads or shared property lines.

Within that, there are a few construction styles. Side-by-side pickets are the simplest. Board-on-board overlaps pickets so no gaps open up as wood dries and shrinks. Shadowbox alternates boards on each side of the rails for a fence that looks finished from both sides. A top cap and trim board give any of them a more custom look.

  • Typical height: 6 ft standard; 8 ft where allowed

Acreage or subdivision lot?

On acreage

On acreage, privacy fencing usually goes where you live — around the backyard, pool, or patio — with ranch fencing across the rest of the land. A privacy section along a road or a neighboring home is another common use.

On subdivision lots

On subdivision lots, privacy fencing is the default. Many deed-restricted neighborhoods specify height, picket style, and stain color, so if your property has HOA or deed restrictions, check with your board before you choose.

Good to know

  • Board-on-board and shadowbox styles stay gap-free as wood moves with the seasons.
  • Solid fences catch wind; post setting and spacing matter as much as the boards.
  • We request Texas 811 utility locates before any digging.
  • Gates are braced and hung on heavy-duty hinges so they don't sag.
