Chain link fence with a locked double gate on a grassy field

Look. Chain link is about function first. Standard galvanized silver is the most economical, while black or green vinyl-coated chain link blends into landscaping and looks noticeably more finished. It works well for dog runs, side yards, back property lines, sports areas, and commercial lots where visibility and security matter more than privacy. Privacy slats can be added if you need some screening.

Upkeep. Very little. Galvanized and vinyl-coated wire both resist rust, and there's nothing to stain or seal. The main things to watch are gates and tension: a sagging gate or a loose stretch of fabric is usually a quick adjustment. Keeping vines off the fabric prevents it from pulling out of shape over time.

Cost. Chain link is the most budget-friendly fence we install for most applications, especially on long runs. Vinyl coating, taller heights, heavier gauge wire, and commercial-grade posts raise the price, but it typically remains well below wood, vinyl, or ornamental metal per foot.
